Moving Out of a Rental Property
What to Do When Moving Out of a Rental Property:
- Look at your lease 60 days before it expires.
- Notify your landlord in writing that you intend to move out.
- Give them your new address.
- Request a walk-through inspection.
- Request that your security deposit be returned.
- Pay everything you owe.
- Rent, lights, gas, water, electricity, etc.
- Move all your belongings out of the rental property.
- Clean the rental unit.
- Be sure to sweep.
- Don’t leave any trash or belongings behind.
- Take photos and videos of the rental property before leaving. Also, consider asking a friend to walk through the unit with you.
- Schedule a walk-through inspection with your landlord within 4 days of moving out.
- During the walkthrough, your landlord may make a list of repairs or fees. Do NOT sign it unless you agree with the repairs and fees on the list.
- If you disagree with items on the list, then you must dispute them in writing. Make your own list. Sign it, date it, and give one copy to your landlord.
What About My Security Deposit?
As long as you did not damage the property and you paid your rent, then your landlord must return your security deposit to you. If your landlord does not return your security deposit, then you should contact your local legal aid program or a private attorney.
