Renter's Guide

Before Moving In:

  • Make sure to budget.
    • Save for the security deposit and aim to spend no more than 30% of your income on rent.
  • Check out the place.
    • Walk through with your landlord.
    • Ask for any repairs you deem necessary.
    • Take pictures of how the home looks.
    • Get a copy of the lease.

While Living There:

  • Pay your rent on time.
  • Ask for repairs in writing.

When Moving Out:

  • Review your lease at least three months before it ends.
  • Notify your landlord in writing that you’ll be moving out at the end of the lease and keep a copy of the notice.
  • Remove all your belongings from the unit and make sure everything is broom clean.
  • Schedule a walk-through with your landlord.
    • Take pictures of how you’re leaving the unit.
    • Make a list of things that need to be repaired.
    • Sign the walk-through list only if you agree with your landlord.
  • Ask for your security deposit in writing and make sure your landlord knows where to send it.
